Coney Island Boardwalk
Keep an eye on summer this year, The Beach Boys told me. I certainly tried yesterday. I stood on the pier with my parents and drew the first beach goers of the season. I heard there were 800,000 people out there with us on Coney Island. Revelers dressed in mermaid tails. Families building moats and sandcastles. Percussionists playing clave rhythms under a Puerto Rican flag. I saw a couple kissing under The Cyclone. I saw a guy wading into the ocean holding a beer, a cigarette and playing with his daughter at the same time. You couldn’t have asked for a better beach day. Made me wish I had brought my swimsuit and left my sketchbook at home.
