Behind the Painting
I left the house for a late afternoon walk. I stopped in to a nearby store I'd never visited before. I met Tom the Tie-Dye Man. I come from a family of tie-dyers. I felt right at home.
He showed me patterns. He showed me colors. Orbs and washes. Folds and ripples. Lavender and indigo. Coral and turquoise.
He told me about the custom clothes he'd dyed for Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga. I bought a blue bandana and walked through Williamsburg and down to the water.
A familiar view. A new vantage point. Waves crashed against rocks and driftwood.
The sky and the river had been dyed by the sunset. I painted the patterns. Orbs and washes. Folds and ripples.
