Behind the Painting
Mile 26 of the New York City Marathon. The last marathon painting of the season.
I sat on the bleachers and watched the runners turn into the final straightaway, some raising their arms in celebration, some leaning forward in agony, all pushing toward one common goal.
The runners cast long shadows on the pavement, hundreds of figures dwarfed by a backdrop of Central Park trees and midtown Manhattan skyscrapers.
It was a fitting end to the race, and a fitting start to a triumphant week in New York City.
