Behind the Painting
I capped off an unforgettable New York City Marathon at the finish line. Okay, so I didn’t run a marathon, but I would say I painted one, starting back in August with preliminary sketches for the official poster, painting and repainting that poster through October and September, and ending up on the last mile with my watercolors on a sunny November morning.
We watched Hellen Obiri sprint to the fastest women’s time ever, then saw Benson Kipruto make one last effort to hold off Alexander Mutiso at the finish line.
The wheelchair, handcycle, and women’s and men’s leaders were followed by wave upon wave of runners, a slow trickle at first, then an opening of the floodgates, thousands of New Yorkers and runners from all over the globe casting shadows on the Central Park pavement under golden leaves and blue skies.
