Behind the Painting

I went out on a Saturday night looking for the city lights. I thought I'd walk awhile, maybe make my way up to Times Square, but as soon as I hiked up the steps Penn Station and there I was in a postcard of New York City, the Garden and the Empire State Building and a hot dog cart.

I painted by the light of an all-night diner, pressed against the subway entrance doing my best to dodge dozens of Rangers fans in red white and blue jerseys.
"Tickets! Who needs tickets?" Someone banged on the diner window.

The street was a rush of taxis and tour buses. A line built up for the hot dog cart. Maybe people were in the Christmas spirit. I was hearing songs. A guy walked by me singing "Silver Bells, Silver Bells."

Fairytale of New York blasted from a car window, the voices of Shane McGowan and Kirsty MacColl rising insolently over traffic. The music from another car was equally on the nose, Alicia Keys in an Empire State of Mind.

I finished painting and walked right into the Tick Tock Diner. I sat down and ordered the sandwich I'd seen in the window, pastrami burger with fries.
