Behind the Painting
I walked up 9th Street, past the deep stoops and the corner shops and the makeshift gardens. I stopped where the roofs of the row houses start to alternate between round and hexagonal, cutting a sawtooth pattern on the sky.
People walked away from the park, their conversations fading in and out of ear shot.
“I’m just gonna say it was a lovely afternoon. It was a nice way to take us out of the madness.”
“Have you seen the telescope man recently?”
A few houses in front of me, a guy in an Eli Manning Jersey opened his front gate.
“Paint my house if you want.” I told him I already had. He came out to take a peek.
“Oh, you’re not that Reddit guy, Shitty Watercolour. You’re good watercolor.”
I asked him how the Giants were looking for that night’s opening game.
“Well, it could go either way. When I wear this jersey we either lose in the worst way possible, or we win the Super Bowl.”
I thought of him when I saw the next morning’s box score.
