Behind the Painting

Most artists know about this unwritten rule. Or at least they should, because it’s been around for roughly 125 years.

If you’re walking by a pond and you see some water lilies, you have to stop and paint them.

This of course dates back to Claude Monet, who was so compelled by water lilies that he painted them at least 250 times. He even had a pond and flower garden custom built for the purpose.

Well, I don’t make the rules. I walked out onto a wooden dock that seemed to be on its last legs by the way it groaned and wobbled.

I sat down cautiously and painted with my feet dangling from the edge, white and red flowers dotting green lilypads, as the cool Kansas morning heated up into a summer afternoon.
